Report sent to Bernard de Montfaucon, 1737 Mar. 11.

Giovanni Calchia reports the results of the mission assigned to him by the French Ambassador at the Spanish Court on behalf of Father Bernard de Montfaucon. Calchia was sent to the library of the Escorial Monastery of S. Lorenzo to conduct a thorough search for a manuscript supposedly written in Greek by Tertullian. He examined the indexes of the library written by Benito Arias Montano, Giuseppe da Sigüenza and Antonio di San Gioseppe, as well as the index of manuscripts at the Vatican, made for the King of Spain. After an assiduous search he reached the conclusion that a Greek manuscript by Tertullian did in fact not exist. Signed Giovanni Calchia; dated Madrid 11 Marzo 1737; return address of Sr. Duvernay, secretary of the French Ambassador in Madrid.
